The Chartered Institute of Housing’s new professional standards

Following two years of working with its members, residents, other housing professionals, housing organisations and employers, and professional bodies from beyond housing, the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) has published a new set of professional standards.  The objective of the standards is to demonstrate a common purpose which celebrates the housing profession’s collective identity, an understanding of what is important to housing professionals, what they stand for and what they are trying to achieve.

The standards consist of seven characteristics developed to enable housing professionals to reflect on and think about their professional needs:

  • Integrity
  • Inclusive
  • Ethical
  • Knowledgeable
  • Skilled
  • Advocate and
  • Leadership.

It is anticipated that the standards will enable individual housing professionals to take charge of their personal and professional development and their career, providing a framework for:

  • Making better decisions about professional development
  • Learning how to implement innovative ways of working
  • Performing with increased confidence
  • Challenging unprofessional behaviour including bias and discrimination and
  • Acting in line with personal and professional values.
